Clear Answers to UK Payment & Finance Queries
Everything you need to know about card machines, merchant accounts, transaction fees, and commercial business finance.
How long does it take to set up and receive a new card machine?
From application submission and standard UK business document verification to terminal delivery, the typical turnaround is between 3 to 5 business days. Your terminal arrives pre-configured and tested so you can start trading immediately.
What is the difference between a portable and mobile card machine?
A portable card machine communicates wirelessly via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth with a charging base station, with an operating range of approximately 100 metres inside your venue (ideal for table service in restaurants or styling chairs in salons). A mobile card machine is completely untethered, featuring an integrated roaming 4G multi-network SIM that works anywhere across the UK.
Do your card machines support contactless, Apple Pay, and Google Pay?
Yes. All modern terminals provided through Merchant Business Advance support UK contactless limits, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Chip & PIN security protocols.
What happens if our broadband internet connection goes down?
Many of our countertop and portable terminals feature automatic fallback connectivity. If your broadband or local Wi-Fi drops, the terminal automatically switches to an internal multi-network 4G roaming backup, ensuring your checkout never halts.
Can an EPOS system operate if the internet disconnects?
Yes, reputable modern cloud EPOS systems incorporate an offline mode that temporarily queues transactions locally and synchronizes sales records once your connection is restored.
Can I connect my existing receipt printer and barcode scanner?
Many standard USB or ESC/POS hardware peripherals can be integrated. During our initial consultation, we audit your existing hardware to see what can be safely reused to minimize your initial capital expenditure.
What is the difference between flat-rate aggregators and Interchange-Plus pricing?
Aggregators typically charge a high flat fee (around 1.75%) on all transactions, regardless of whether a customer uses a low-cost debit card or high-cost commercial card. Under Interchange-Plus pricing, you pay the true scheme interchange rate (capped at 0.2% for UK consumer debit) plus a transparent acquirer margin. For businesses turning over more than £3,000 to £5,000 monthly, Interchange-Plus is usually substantially cheaper.
Are there hidden fees on merchant processing statements?
Some legacy providers charge minimum monthly service fees (MMSC), non-qualifying interchange surcharges, paper statement charges, and high PCI non-compliance fees. Merchant Business Advance conducts free statement reviews to expose these fees and negotiate transparent terms.
What is a Merchant Cash Advance and how is it repaid?
A Merchant Cash Advance (MCA) is revenue-based financing where a lender advances capital against your future customer card receipts. Repayment is made automatically as an agreed percentage (typically 10%–15%) of your daily card terminal sales. If sales drop during a quiet week, your repayments decrease proportionally.
Do I need to put up commercial property as security for a business loan?
Not necessarily. We broker both unsecured commercial loans (underwritten on company credit history, trading turnover, and director personal guarantees) and secured commercial facilities for higher borrowing requirements.
Can I keep my existing UK business bank account?
Yes. Card settlement payouts and business loan funds are cleared directly into your designated UK business bank account with any major UK bank or building society.
What support is provided if a card terminal develops a hardware fault?
All terminals are backed by UK technical support. If a hardware fault cannot be resolved remotely over the phone, a replacement terminal is typically dispatched via priority courier for next-business-day swap out.
